INTRODUCTION

This workshop is designed for educators and professionals working in school settings and is led by our multi-disciplinary training team.  Participants will learn to work effectively with children with intellectual disabilities (ID) using instructional strategies based on principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), including shaping, chaining, Discrete Trial Training (DTT), and an overview of naturalistic teaching strategies. Participants will have an opportunity to practice designing intervention using these strategies with guidance from instructors. Space is limited!

OBJECTIVES

 At the completion of training, participants will be able to learn:

  • How the characteristics of ID impact learning
  • What is ABA
  • How to teach children with ID using fundamental behavioral strategies
  • The components of a teaching loop
  • How to collect and analyze data
  • Strategies for managing classroom
  • Strategies for promoting communication
  • Strategies for implementing DTT
  • Strategies for implementing naturalistic ABA approaches
  • About resources available for those working with children with ID

TARGET AUDIENCE: 

This workshop is designed for educators, professionals, as well as others interested in educational strategies for teaching elementary through high school-aged children with ID.

Workshop Schedule

 

 

Day 1: Intellectual Disability

  • an overview of ID including core symptoms, strengths, and challenges.
  • How ID symptoms impact learning and behavior.

Days 2 : –Applied Behavior Analysis

  • Define Applied Behavior Analysis
  • Define the 7 dimensions.
  • Distinguish between observable and unobservable Behavior.
  • Operationally define a Behavior to change
  • Identify measurable dimensions of behavior

Days 3 : – Functions of Behavior and Antecedent Strategies

  • Describe the benefit of using a multidisciplinary assessment approach
  • Identify events that predict WHEN & WHERE & WHY the behavior occurs.
  • Identify assessment methods.
  • Select appropriate antecedent strategies based on the function of behavior

Days 4 :  – Teaching Replacement Behavior and Skills Assessments

  • Select appropriate replacement behaviors Describe differential reinforcement procedures and extinction
  • Interpret skill assessment methods (ABLLS-R & VB-MAPP)
  • Interpret functional skill assessment methods (AFLS)
  • How to use skill assessments to set goals

Days 5 :   –Teaching Methods and Data Collection and Monitoring Progress

  • Explain how to use reinforcement, shaping procedure, prompting techniques, and task analysis for complex skills.
  • Take data using the common data collection methods
  • Interpret a baseline graph and decide when to start an intervention

Days 6 : – Generalizing & Maintaining and Collaboration with Parents

  • Describe strategies used for generalization & maintenance skills.
  • Identify a process to implement generalization strategies.
  • Describe what is collaboration in Joint Planning.
  • Outline the six steps to a ‘productive interaction’.

Days 7 : – Writing IEP and Methods to Support Students’ Transitions

  • Identify what is and is not included in an Individual Education Plans IEP.
  • Write a SMART IEP goal.
  • Describe the process for transition plans for micro and macro transitions.
  • Create a transition plan for micro and macro transitions.

Days 8 : – Large Group Discussion

  • Discuss Case Studies in ABA for children with ID.

Days 9 : – ABA Business Bootcamp

  • Discuss Business Start Up Essentials, Organizational Financial Metrics, Insurance & Risk Management, Performance Management, Billing Compliance and Supervision & Oversight Systems.
  • Present information and resources to attendees.
